no LC would condone my methods…

So. I’ve been reluctant to write about this because it feels so fleeting and ephemeral and I’m terribly worried about jinxing myself. But the need to share has won out so here we are.

For about the past week or so I have been able to get Juju to nurse a little every day. There are lots of caveats to this. She’ll only nurse on the right (just once on the left). She needs a nipple shield. She does best with a couple of ounces from a bottle first so she’s not too hungry. She will only nurse skin-to-skin. Etc.

Here’s the best part, though. I finally got her to latch by dribbling melted ice cream from a syringe onto my nip.ples. Yep! C gave Juju a taste of ice cream off of her finger and Juju practically sucked her finger off. That gave me the idea. Darned if it didn’t work! Now I only need to use the syringe maybe half of the time, and only to put a teeny drop and she’s off and running. Not your typical method, for sure, but nothing about feeding this child has been easy or typical.

But still! This is amazing progress for us. The awe and power and love I feel for her when we share this is something I never thought I’d have with Juju. Even if it doesn’t last this has been such a gift for us.

I have lots of logistical questions for all of you nursers out there (which feels like everyone but me), but I’m going to save them for a while and just enjoy my beautiful sweet baby with her milky little face looking up at me and grinning because she finally gets it.

Seriously, I think that’s fabulous. Whatever works, whatever works!! Enjoy it.

Fantastic idea!! You girls are rock star parents :)

  3. Allison from 2momstobe.blogspot.com

    LOL. Congratulations! Very innovative!

  4. thelesbiannextdoor

I think that’s great! As long as it works- who cares how you do it, right?

    Congrats!!

  5. thelesbiannextdoor

That is great! I am so glad you have found a way to do it!

  6. bionicbrooklynite

a spoon full of sugar, eh? nice!

(also, i’m not sure i’ve told you that Juju is what i called my maternal grandmother, a famous ice cream hound who would have been quite pleased with this method.)

    • mamaandmummy

Ha about your grandma. I think my nana would have approved as well.

It’s breast milk ice cream, right? Ha! I think it’s brilliant how you’ve gotten JuJu to the breast. Whatever it takes.

We had to use a nipple shield for a while and I found that I gradually weaned her off of it one feeding at a time.

Breast milk ice cream? Um, eww. ;) I’m going to burn that bridge when I come to it re: the nipple shield. For now I’ll do whatever she needs and not worry about how things “should” be.

Definitely falls under “whatever works” – YEAH Juju and yeah for you too!

  9. Pomegranate

oh, i am so thrilled for you! grinning milky face is so the best, tied with sleepy milky face!

    ps: love the method.
pps: breast milk tastes a lot like vanilla ice cream, anyhow.

    • mamaandmummy

I love her little grin. So, so cute. And agreed about the taste. Not as sweet, but nearly so.

filing this in the “things to remember after baby is born” portion of my brain.

    • mamaandmummy

Yeah, do your best to not go down this path because boy has it been a long one! We’re in the teeny minority of people whose baby just don’t get it, though. Most are fine within a few weeks.

    Congrats. That’s awesome.

    Excellent!

That is a FABULOUS way to encourage her (and once she’s there, I bet she’s pretty delighted that there’s tasty warm milk to be had). I’m so very happy for you that you three have figured this out. Enjoy it; I bet she’ll be latching without any coaxing at all before long. :)

    • mamaandmummy

It’s getting much easier already. Our next hurdle will be the left side, and then the shield, but I’m ecstatic with where we’re at so far.

whatever works, i say! our ped may or may not have suggested putting a dab of karo syrup on a pacifier to try to get our dude to take one. we did, to no avail. but if ice cream would do it, i’d dab ice cream on the thing!

    congratulations :)

    • mamaandmummy

I’ve heard of karo before. The hospital used sugar water when she was completely inconsolable when we were hospitalized for jaundice, and while it wasn’t something I was too keen to put in her body I’d probably do it again. You do what you have to.

WooHoo! Congrats, that’s a huge accomplishment. It sounds similar to the method the lactation consultant used when she got my son to latch for the first time. I hope it continues to go well for the two of you, now that things seem to have clicked for Miss Juju.

    • mamaandmummy

Thank you, I know you know what it’s like to have a tough nurser! I’m hoping she’s finally got it and there won’t be too many setbacks from this point on.

    Um, I think that’s pretty awesome ;)
